Wine Education

Discover a new world of wine

Sheldon’s Wine Cellars, in partnership with Defining Wine, offers Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) courses in both wines and spirits. The courses are run by our very own Amanda Rowley DIP, qualified educator and WSET panel judge. We run the range of WSET courses, from Level 1 to Level 3, including the WSET Level 1 and Level 2 Award in Spirits.

WSET Level 1 Award in Wines

WSET Level 1 Award in Wines (formerly the Foundation Certificate) is intended to establish the basic skills and product knowledge required in the service and retail of wine; it’s ideal preparation for a first job in hospitality or retail.

Also a good introductory first course for the wine enthusiast who wishes to study in a structured way; the qualification will cover skills such as identifying wine styles, practice of storing and serving wine, and food and wine matching.

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines

WSET's Level 2 Award in Wines is a beginner- to intermediate-level qualification exploring wines, suitable for industry professionals and wine enthusiasts.

This qualification is intended for beginners wishing to learn about a wide range of wines or those seeking to build on the introductory knowledge gained with the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines. You’ll gain knowledge of the principal and regionally important grape varieties of the world, the regions in which they are grown, and the styles of wine they produce. Through a combination of tasting and theory, you’ll explore the factors that impact style and quality and learn how to describe these wines with confidence.

WSET Level 3 Award in Wines

WSET Level 3 Award in Wines (formerly the Advanced Certificate) is designed for anyone wishing to gain in-depth knowledge of wines and spirits and build on knowledge gained at Intermediate level. You’ll acquire a thorough understanding of the factors influencing the style, quality and price of wines from key wine producing regions of the world. You’ll also develop analytical tasting skills using the systematic approach to tasting; your blind tasting skills will form part of the examinations.

This qualification has full accreditation from the UK Government’s Qualifications & Curriculum Authority as a Level 3 Vocational Qualification. It provides the knowledge required for those wishing to progress on to the Diploma Level 4.

WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits

The WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits is a beginner level introduction to spirits for those starting a career in the industry or pursuing an interest in spirits.

For individuals new to the subject, this qualification offers a hands-on introduction to the world of spirits. On successful completion you’ll receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.
